4th and 5th Select Program

Program Overview

The NoVA Youth Hoops 4th & 5th Grade Select Program provides boys and girls with an opportunity to experience competitive basketball in a positive, challenging, and development-focused environment. The Select Program serves as an introduction to travel basketball and provides a pathway for players who may be interested in more advanced competitive opportunities as they progress through middle school and beyond.

Eligibility & Evaluations

All players interested in participating in the 4th or 5th Grade Select Program must first register for the NoVA Youth Hoops Recreational (House) League and attend the required player evaluations.

Players who achieve a qualifying evaluation score will be invited to participate in Select Program tryouts. Final team selections are based on player evaluations, tryout performance, skill level, basketball IQ, and roster needs.

Participation in the Select Program is by invitation and is intended for players who demonstrate the readiness and ability to compete at the Select level.

4th Grade Select

The 4th Grade Select Program is designed for players who are ready to take their first step into competitive basketball.

Teams are led by our Travel Director and experienced coaches, with an emphasis on individual skill development, team concepts, basketball fundamentals, and learning how to compete in a more competitive environment.

The program includes:

  • Two practices each week
  • Sunday competitive games
  • Additional skill development training sessions
  • Games against select and travel-level programs from across Northern Virginia
  • Focused instruction in ball-handling, passing, shooting, defense, and decision-making
  • Development of teamwork, communication, and basketball IQ

5th Grade Select

The 5th Grade Select Program builds upon the foundation established in 4th Grade Select and provides players with an increased level of competition and development.

Teams are led by our Travel Director and experienced coaches and practice twice each week while competing in Sunday games against strong programs throughout Northern Virginia.

Players may compete against programs from communities such as Gainesville, Great Falls, and other established basketball organizations in the region. This provides players with the opportunity to experience different styles of play and compete against a variety of strong opponents.

The program emphasizes:

  • Continued individual skill development
  • Team offense and defensive concepts
  • Basketball IQ and decision-making
  • Competitive habits and game awareness
  • Teamwork, communication, and accountability
  • Preparation for future middle school and travel basketball

Team Formation

Players who are invited to participate in Select tryouts will be evaluated based on their current skill level, basketball fundamentals, athletic ability, basketball IQ, and readiness for competitive play.

Teams are formed based on evaluations, tryout performance, player development needs, and roster considerations. Our goal is to create competitive teams while providing players with an environment that supports continued growth and development.

Program Philosophy

While the Select Program provides a more competitive experience than recreational basketball, player development remains at the center of the program. We want players to learn how to compete, handle challenges, become better teammates, and develop the skills and confidence necessary to continue their basketball journey.

The 4th and 5th Grade Select Programs serve as an important bridge between recreational basketball and the more advanced levels of competition offered through NoVA Youth Hoops, including Middle School Travel.
